“NUGS and USAG Is A Waste Of Resources”- Former UDS SRC President

In my humble opinion,  I think some of the “useless” entities  I have seen in Student leadership in recent times are NATIONAL UNION OF GHANA STUDENTS (NUGS) AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’  ASSOCIATION OF GHANA (USAG).

These were not the once vibrant bodies that were handed over to us by our forefathers. In the last 10 years, what can these bodies boast of achieving? These very bodies that used to be the beacon of hope and voice of the ordinary Ghanaian student has rather sadly become a breeding ground for future ‘politrickcians’ thereby rendering these powerful  bodies voiceless

It will interest you to know that most of the National NUGS and USAG aspirants can’t  even win elections on their respective campuses. For some too, they make NUGS and USAG their next target and last hope once they lose their campus elections. They are the  trouble mongers in these bodies.

Today you can’t win a portfolio in these bodies  without aligning yourself to a caucus (NDC/NPP). All that National NUGS and USAG are interested in is CONGRESS. Even with that, it is only the voting that induces  most  institutions to attend. Shamefully, they can not behave like Intellectuals and vote in peace. They will fight till  official time for Congress elapses. Elections are impeded even at Emergency Congresses all because of partisan politics: NDC and NPP. I got to know Education has very little impact on our character at NUGS/USAGS CONGRESS. Sometimes you can see a whole SRC  president of a campus fighting in public. Instead of arguing with facts, they prefer to argue  with voices at Congresses.

If had my own way, I will stop the “UDSes” especially UDS Tamale Campus from attending  Congresses down south. It’s waste of resources. Today a single Congress will not cost less than Ghc15,000.00 to attend. And for a Senate  or Central Committee meetings, it will cost not less than GHC 5,o00.00 to attend.

You can imagine if you were to attend all the useless emergency Congresses. The more there are emergency congresses, the more the local campuses spend to attend. Not to talk of Central Committee and Senate Meetings, a minimum of 2 each.

A single SRC administration will spend not less than a whooping Ghc 50,000.00 on NUGS AND  USAG related  activities within their tenure in office.

  • NUGS Congress

  • NUGS emergency Congresses

  • NUGS Central Committee meetings

  • USAG congress

  •  USAG emergency Congresses

  • USAG SENATE meetings

For those of us at the UDS  campuses, the  amount quoted here is almost a quarter of the total revenue  generated by some of our councils: Nyankpala and Navrongo SRC  to be precise. And what do we get in return? Absolutely nothing! Except a divided leadership at the national front.

NUGS AND USAG are not getting any better.  They are becoming  more polarized than ever. They seem not to agree on anything. Maybe, the local campuses who are stakeholders in these bodies can boycott  their activities. Until they put their house to order, we should not patronize  their services/activities.

Even, Their unity Congresses end up in disuniting them further. Why should  we have two NATIONAL NUGS PRESIDENTS in this era.
